Someone was giving a bunch of aquarium stuff for free. Hoping that I could get a smaller filter out of it, I took the stuff.

Fluval 403 filter how many gallons

Most of it was junk, but there was a fluval 403, with most of the parts. I plan on giving it to a friend who desperately needs a canister filter but can't afford one. I told her I would find out what parts it needs and how much they cost so she could buy them, then I'd help her put it together. Problem is that I need to see what it looks like set-up.I'm a visually learner/person The manual I found from Hagen helps, but the pic sucks. So what I was hoping for was some pics of what the filter looks like set-up in the tank - the intake & spray bar - and some good pics of the hook-ups to the tubing from the canister. Does anyone one have any?

Thought I had a 403 filter. Apparently it's a 203. Not sure how similar the two are but I can take pictures if you'd like?

It's just connected to a rubbermaid right now. I found the most important thing was the rubber 'O' ring. If that's missing you will definitely need a new one in order to set it up. If you could take pictures that would be great.

I hope they are similar in style. It does have the o ring. The parts that are missing are mostly the output and tubing stuff. The 203 is just a smaller version of the 403. The only possible difference is that the 203 MIGHT have one less media basket than the 403, although I can't remember for certain. With almost all of my Fluvals (including the 403), I've never used the spray bar, as it can produce some nasty calcium deposits and/or other staining.

I just let the output flow directly into the water, generally on the opposite corner of the tank from the intake. I'm not sure based on the wording on your initial post, but it looks like you may be planning to set up the filter itself inside the tank. Don't do that. It is a canister (i.e., not in-tank) filter, and the canister needs to be positioned substantially below the bottom of the tank in order to work properly. Again, I'm not sure if that is what you meant by 'set up in the tank,' but I wanted to be sure. For a better idea how to set up your filter, all the principles in the larger 4- and 5-series filters (the 304, 404, 305, and 405) would apply to the 403. Here's a link which might be useful: If all else fails, I would strongly recommend calling Hagen/Fluval customer service.

That place is really good about walking the consumer through things when help is needed, although you will likely have to leave a message and wait for them to call you back. UGADawgGuy.

Hmm - harder to do than I thought it would be. Decided as webcam was involved to take out the water and disconnect so I could prop up on the bed. Ok so we start with the inner canister - as you can see top one is foam - middle is charcoal and bottom are those little tool shaped ones (sorry my naming is way off but a closer up view to follow) These are the 'tool shaped pieces' Next charcoal bag Inside the bag Foam piece so you can see it Foam inside canister Now onto the fun stuff - lol.

The media container inside the filter Output valve with plastic connector Output valve closer to canister (ignore the white stuff - tape residue when it was on incorrectly Input valve closer to canister Input valve with plastic connector Input hose Output hose connectors Output hose And last but not least the O-ring In my personal opinion the hardest part about installing the filter was the o-ring. You have to put the ring around the lid until it reaches the mid-way mark and there is a bit of a lip there to stop it.

Tried to make a youtube but lighting isn't ideal.
