I am having the same problem of a black vertical line on the document when printing from any application that has a graphic in it (Mozilla & MS Office products). If I print from Word or Excel with no inserted graphics the documents print perfectly, but if I insert a graphic, pic, etc from the web or from file the black line appears down the right side of either document. I am using Microsoft Office 2002 on Windows XP. I checked the beta site, but don't see any beta drivers for the Laserjet 1020 for XP. Is there anything out there that you know of that would work in my situation to clear up this trouble? I really like the printer and don't want to have to return it. Unfortunately no help here.
Just the same problem with my piece of garbage HP 1020 on Vista 32 bit Ultimate. Thought I was getting a steal at $99.99. Unfortunately this printer worked as well as HPs support with my previous Photosmart 3310.
It was worthless. Same annoying dashed black line down the right-hand side. I tried everything. Using the Vista 32 bit driver, Vista 64 bit driver, XP driver, un-install and re-install to the point of ad nauseam. I also changed margins as someone suggested, no love. That line would not go away.
Does HP do any testing what so ever? How could this issue not be on their troubleshooting page for this device? I returned the lemon and got a Brother HL-2040 for $30.00 less. Plugged it in and was printing in under four minutes. No black lines and the text looks great. I'm done with HP. I had this problem ( vertical lines in printing) using XP but the answer may solve the problem also for VISTA users.

It is a HP issue and has nothing to do with Microsoft. Although HP knows the issue it has not released a bug fix version of the driver. The user that don’t find the solution just buys a new printer or he switches to the more ink consuming solution suggested by the technicians. Am I to susspissious or this is a strategic market policy of HP?

Anyway, there are two solutions to the problem: 1. ( Recommended) Find the old XP drivers of the printer (version 4.0) Try to uninstall the current driver and install the older version. If it works for vista you will have no more line problems with printing. I fixed my problem with that 2.
The second solution it came from the technicians of HP (and thus my suspicion). Although it works, it does not fix the bug, it just bypasses it. In addition, you will be consuming more ink as you will be using the best resolution. This works for XP and it must also be working for Vista.

Didn't work the first couple of time the key is to change the preference in the application you are using to print, as well the general settings for the printer under Windows.
